Tara M. Hinds is a licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC) practicing in the Beverly area of Chicago alongside her first responder husband (who is also & psychologist). She specializes in adolescents and adults.
. She earned her Masters in counseling psychology from the Adler School of Professional Psychology and her Bachelors in music therapy from Loyola University New Orleans.
Having worked in private practice, schools, residential treatment centers, psychiatric hospitals, non-profit organizations and community-based mental health, she has a wide range of experience and particular interest in treating eating disorders, depression, anxiety, trauma, women’s issues, and life adjustment issues, such as: divorce, grief, and job loss/ change. Due to her personal and professional experiences, she enjoys serving first responders and their families, as well as those coping with medically complex situations. Therapy approaches include CBT, DBT, experiential, and creative interventions customized to suit the needs of each client, being mindful of their developmental stage and unique set of circumstances.
For clients struggling with eating disorders, Tara also offers the Recovery Record app as a support and way of interacting outside of session to help clients reach their goals in terms of appropriate nourishment, building positive self-image and awareness of feelings, and utilizing coping skills effectively and frequently.
It is so easy to be frustrated when we feel like everything we are trying is not working. I see the therapy process as an opportunity to develop a connection with the client, identify what they would like to be different in their lives, and, working together, offer ideas, strategies, tools, resources, and skills that will empower them to reach a new level of satisfaction in their daily life.
I believe that one of the reasons for my success as a therapist comes from my ability to empathize with others, to understand the experience of another person’s feelings. It is important to feel understood and not judged. There is a personal joy I experience as I see individuals understand, confront, and surmount their problems. My style is very interactive; I’m not big on the idea of therapist as a blank screen. I bring my personality & sense of humor to our work together. My job is to help nourish the conviction in my clients that they are not crazy, but that the demands of life often are, and that navigating life successfully requires resilience, patience, and an open mind. I view our work together as a collaborative process.
One of the primary benefits of counseling is that you will walk away from the experience empowered. Once you’ve developed new ways of seeing, thinking, feeling, and doing, you have a whole new world ahead of you. Instead of feeling trapped or stuck with the same old way of doing things, you will appreciate what you’ve done in the past and what you can do differently now. Being in counseling is a positive step towards self-improvement and will have a positive impact on yourself and the people around you.
Collaboration with Parents
One of my specialties is working adolescents. Many young people will not ask for help and many parents see it as a personal failure if they take their child to a counselor. There can be nothing farther from the truth. It takes insight, courage, and strength to be willing to acknowledge that as parent, you do not have all of the answers, and to seek professional help, whether for your child or yourself. I like to give parents, children and family members real feedback about how their behavior is impacting those around them. I will collaborate with family members, physicians, and school staff as well as use a variety of approaches that emphasize different strategies to co-create a plan for success with my clients and their families. I feel that it is imperative to work with teens and their parents to strike a balance between creating a safe place for the teen to share confidentially while also maintaining an open pathway for communication with parents so that everyone gains maximum benefits from therapy.
